There is a particular kind of motivation that only comes from being told “you won't make it” by someone who mattered. Before any of this, before the clients, before the agency in two countries, there was a relationship he wanted to build a future with.

Most people carry a moment like that quietly and let it fade. He carried it differently. It became less of a wound and more of a fuel line, the kind of no that does not break you but instead hands you a reason to prove, to yourself more than to anyone else, that you were never the person they thought they saw.

That was the push. Not a business plan. Not a market opportunity. Just a decision that he would rather build something of his own than spend one more day being told what he could not do.

Selling An Idea No One Understood Yet

Rightly said by his favourite “agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaaho to puri kayanat usey tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai” and that is exactly how things worked out for him. We all dream, at some point, of building something real with the people we grew up with. For most, that stays a dream. For him, it became the actual foundation of everything that came next.

Leaving Nokia was not only about the incomplete commitment that still sat with him, it was also about a growing restlessness and a sense that he was capable of building something much bigger. So he took the leap but he did not take it alone. Standing beside him was a childhood friend, the kind of partnership where trust was never in question, only the work ahead of them.

It was not easy to leave a steady income for something that was still uncertain. But he asked just one question: “Does this involve gadgets?” When the answer was yes, he took the risk, left everything behind, and joined the venture. He started Hats-Off Digital, and from there began the journey that shaped the person he is today, someone who has truly been through it all.

Betting Everything On One Thing He Always Had

Starting something fresh is never easy. At best, it begins with nothing more than the feeling of starting something new. Starting a business is harder still. It brings with it greater responsibilities, new challenges, and hardships that you may never have anticipated.

But our CEO has always been a fighter, and he remained one through every challenge. So, he fought again. Only this time, the battles were tougher and the road ahead was far from easy.

What he always had was a knack for creativity. He has a creative mind, and when the time came to build something new, that was exactly what he chose to rely on. He put his creativity to work, turning ideas into possibilities and using the one thing he had always possessed in abundance: his ability to think differently.

When Nobody Could Teach Him, He Taught Himself

But we are talking about 2011, when concepts like these were almost unheard of. Very few people understood what a creative field really meant. For most, creativity meant acting, perhaps sketching, or something within the traditional arts. The idea of digital creativity was still unfamiliar, even a little strange to many.

And the challenge did not end there. The fact that people did not yet understand the concept of digital creativity was only the beginning. The next challenge was learning everything from scratch and constantly finding ways to understand this new field.

Whether it was conducting his own research on Google or watching hours of lectures on YouTube, he gathered every bit of information he could find and kept learning. There were no AI tools to guide him and no ready-made answers. He had to learn, experiment, and figure things out on his own, constantly upgrading his skills along the way.

And during this research, he began designing and slowly started understanding where the industry was headed. Through his own research and experimentation, he recognised the potential of Adobe Illustrator and the importance it could have in the years ahead, at a time when very few people were relying on it or even considering it essential. It was not a prediction based on what others were saying. It came from hours of research, learning, and understanding where design was moving.

But that was not the only challenge. When clients finally started coming in, another hurdle became apparent: language. As a college dropout, he had not had the opportunity to develop strong English communication skills, and in a field where communicating ideas, understanding clients, and presenting creative work were all essential, this became another obstacle he had to overcome.

Today, you may not even realise that this was once a challenge for him. That itself says a lot about how much he worked on himself, alongside building the company. He was not only learning a new industry and building a business from the ground up, but also constantly improving himself to make sure the company could move forward.

These were only a few challenges in a desert filled with many more. There were countless obstacles he came across, moments of doubt, setbacks, and battles that tested him in ways no one else could see.

And then, one day, those challenges began to pay him back.

From A Bajaj Avenger 220 To The Skies Over The UAE

For the first time, everything he had gone through seemed to come full circle. The struggles of his childhood, the heartbreaks, the phase when he started something of his own but had to give up everything else, every difficult chapter had somehow shaped the person he had become.

Came a small milestone: his first bike, a Bajaj Avenger 220. It was something he had worked towards and finally had for himself. But sooner or later, circumstances meant he had to sell it. He got another bike, so there was no heartbreak this time, but there was a small setback. He could not keep two bikes, and the one that had meant so much to him had to go.

But a fighter remains a fighter.

A few years later, he got the same Bajaj Avenger 220 again. It may have seemed like a small thing to someone else, but for him, it was more than a bike. It was a reminder that sometimes, the things we have to let go of are not necessarily gone forever. Sometimes, you find your way back to them.

And just like that, there were milestones after milestones. There was no stopping, and certainly no limit to how far he could go.

Perhaps as a little boy, he might have looked up at the sky, watched a plane fly overhead, and wondered what it would feel like to go that far. Years later, he did. He not only built Hats-Off Digital in India but took it overseas and established its presence in the UAE.

No Degree, No Certificate, Just A Baazigar's Spirit

And from a boy who started with almost nothing and kept reaching for the sky, it becomes clear who inspires him the most: Shah Rukh Khan. In many ways, the parallels are hard to miss. His journey seems to echo one of the most memorable lines from Baazigar: “Degree se sirf certificate milta hai, akal nahi!”

Who would have placed their bets on this? A dropout who went on to build a business, serve clients across the globe, and keep learning every skill the journey demanded of him. Not a skill left unlearned, not a challenge left untouched, and not a client left without his best effort. His journey is proof that where you start does not have to define how far you can go.

But there is still one dream left to achieve: working with the person who has inspired him through so much of his journey. And considering how far he has taken this company, perhaps one day, this box will be ticked too.

Not The End, Just The End of This Chapter

So that brings us to the end of this, not the end of his story, but the end of this year's story shared. There is much more wisdom he could offer, more than any blog could ever hold. Perhaps his struggles could never truly be put into words, not fully, not in a way that does justice to what he actually lived through.

But maybe that was never really the point. Some stories are not meant to be wrapped up neatly. They are meant to be revisited, added to, told a little more each time there is more to tell. This was simply this year's telling.

There will be more, because a story like his is still very much being written. A Story Worth Telling.

So, here is to 15 years of Hats-Off, 15 years of Shabbir’s struggles and hard work, and 15 years of a journey that grew from just two people to a team of 60+.
